At Southern Pursuit Outdoors, we’re here to share the real side of fishing the catches, the misses, the lessons, the gear, and the memories made along the way.
Whether we’re chasing bass, crappie, musky, or just trying something completely different, every trip has a story.
Chasing The Next Bite
There’s always something to learn on the water. Every trip gives us another chance to figure out what the fish are doing, try something different, and see what works.
We pay attention to weather, water conditions, structure, seasonal patterns, and the little things that can make the difference between catching fish and getting skunked. Some days everything comes together. Other days, you can do everything right and still go home empty-handed.
That’s part of fishing. The tough days teach you just as much as the days when the fish are biting.
We’re not here to pretend we have it all figured out. We’re here to share what we’re learning along the way.
Bass Fishing
Bass fishing is a big part of what we love to do.
From chasing largemouth around shallow cover to searching deeper water when conditions change, we’re always trying to figure out what the fish are doing.
We’ll talk about:

Crappie, Bass & Everything In Between
You never really know what you’re going to catch.
Sometimes you throw a bait expecting one species and end up catching something completely different.
One of the craziest examples?
A musky hitting a crappie crankbait.
We still aren’t exactly sure how that happened.
That’s one of the reasons we love fishing. You can make a plan, but the fish don’t have to follow it.

Electronics & Finding Fish
Modern fishing electronics have completely changed the way we approach the water.
We use technology to help understand what is happening beneath the surface, but electronics are only useful if you know how to interpret what you’re seeing.
We’ll share our experiences with:

- Fish finders
- Mapping
- Finding structure
- Locating fish
- Understanding what you’re seeing on the screen
We’re constantly learning, experimenting, and trying to become better anglers.
Fishing Gear
Good gear doesn’t automatically make you a better fisherman.
Knowing when, where, and how to use it matters more.
We’ll put fishing equipment, rods, reels, line, lures, electronics, and other gear to the test and share what we actually think.
No pretending.
No claiming something is amazing just because it looks good on a shelf.
Just real-world experience from people who actually use the gear.
Gear We Actually Use
- Rods & Reels- – For bass fishing, I run Lew’s reels paired with either Lew’s or St. Croix rods. The setup can change depending on the technique, but I like equipment that feels good in my hands and can handle a full day on the water.
- Lures & Tackle – I like to keep bass fishing relatively simple when it comes to color. Blue & black for stained or muddy water. Green pumpkin for cleaner water. But color is only part of it. Presentation matters just as much, and that changes with the season, water conditions, and what the fish are doing. Sometimes the best approach is slowing down and working a bait carefully. Other times the fish want something completely different. We’re always adjusting rather than trying to force one bait or technique to work everywhere.
- Fish Finders & Electronics – Our electronics are a big part of how we find and stay on fish. We run a 12-inch Garmin up front and a 9-inch Garmin at the console for mapping and navigation. When we’re crappie fishing, we also rely on LiveScope to locate fish and see how they’re reacting.
- Fishing Accessories– I keep things simple with the accessories i actually use a Bubba scale to weigh my fish, measuring ruler, pliers, and other basic tools that stay in the boat.
